An Hour of Downbeat Electronica with Hammer on Beats 1 One Mix [INTERVIEW]

The Belfast born, London based producer went from blogging about music to producing and touring.

Welcome the weekend with UK producer Hammer’s downbeat electronica mix on Beats 1’s weekly radio show, One Mix. Expect unreleased Hammer tunes plus music from Axel Boman, Mariah, and Arthur Russell.

Tune in here, exclusively on Apple Music.
Air Date: Friday 30th November 2018 – 21:00 LA / 00:00 NY / 05:00 UK

The Belfast born producer got his start in the music industry as a leading contributor of popular UK music blog Feel My Bicep, alongside childhood friends Andy Ferguson and Matt McBrian, who themselves gravitated towards making and performing music. You may have heard of them by their stage name, Bicep.

While the Bicep boys headed to London to kickstart their musical career, Hammer (real name Rory Hamilton) attended university in Glasgow aiming for a career in rugby. In a past interview with Mixmag, Hamilton mentioned:

“We were trying to keep it together, but it wasn’t viable…It was tough because all of a sudden they just exploded. I was stuck in Glasgow trying to do rugby – and then I realised I didn’t really want to do that at all.”

Soon after, Hamilton devoted himself to music full time. He ran Thunder Disco Club at Glasgow’s Sub Club while making frequent trips to London to work on music with the Bicep duo. Eventually, he fully moved to London, where he currently resides.

EPs like At Once and Canna mark some of Hamilton’s best work, and last month’s Ozone is up there as well. Hamilton embodies a house music sound brought to life by warm, rich synths, and a sense of playful energy.

We got to know more about what drives Hamilton’s musical sensibilities, as he shared his dream collaborator, favorite throwback track, desert-island dance record, and more with us. Read on to see what he had to say. First show experience?

Electric Forest Cuts Programming Down To One Weekend in 2019

The Michigan festival has been two weekends the past two years

Popular Rothbury, Michigan music festival Electric Forest has graced the tree lines of the Double JJ Resort for two weekends over the past two years. Sadly, in 2019 they will be cutting back to just one weekend, taking place on June 27th-30th.

In a statement posted to social media, the festival’s organizers explained:

During the next year the Electric Forest grounds will see many exciting improvements that include upgraded landscapes, areas with new grass, and infrastructure improvements across the site. Most importantly, a new multi-year Sherwood Forest conservation plan will take effect.

Protecting and curating the grounds of Electric Forest for generations to come is important to all of the Forest Family. The impact that comes with two weekends will need to be reduced for the new improvements to take hold.

With conservation and longevity in mind, Electric Forest will be one magical weekend in 2019.

To many this will be a disappointment – but in light of the current state of the environment, necessary actions must be taken to preserve the festival we know and love. It’s great to see a festival take responsibility for their well-documented impacts

Wristbands and lodging packages for the festival will go on sale at 12:00 PM on Friday, Dec. 7th with a Six in the Forest and Four in the Forest Loyalty pre-sales happening on Dec. 5, 2018.

Electric Forest’s organizers have yet to announce any 2019 lineup details.

The uplifting breakup smash is about a tumultuous relationship on the outs. Don’t worry, though; Romero and Berg turn a bad situation into something positive with empowering vocals and heartening soundscapes.

Jauz Puts A Somber Spin On Marshmello & Bastille's "Happier"

Jauz transforms “Happier” with a moody new remix.

Marshmello & Bastille‘s bittersweet hit collaboration “Happier” has received a transformative new remix from Jauz. While the upbeat original continues to grace the airwaves – and recently topped Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart in mid November – Jauz opted for a different approach entirely.

The multi-genre bass music producer (real name Sam Vogel) has explored many different stylistic realms as of late. His recent album, The Wise and The Wicked, saw the producer incorporate a vast palette of sounds from dubstep to future bass to breakbeat and more.

While Bastille’s original vocals remain intact, Jauz ventures into a chillstep-focused arrangement without much reliance on the source material of Marshmello’s production. Drawing out singer Dan Smith‘s voice and adding sweeping synth soundscapes, Jauz effectively crafts a moody new tone in sharp contrast to the original track.

In a recent interview with us, Jauz reaffirmed his continued intent to explore whichever sounds strike personal relevance with him in the moment, and to focus less on audience and industry expectations. Needless to say, his inventive approach to this remix remains true to that thesis.

The Jauz remix of Marshmello & Bastille’s “Happier” is out now via Marshmello’s Joytime Collective imprint.

David Guetta Returns to Toolroom As Jack Back to Re-Release "Grenade"

David Guetta returns to Toolroom Records under new alias.

Though he’s remained a veteran figurehead for commercial dance music over the last decade, David Guetta is returning to his underground roots with new music under his alias, Jack Back. His forthcoming release, “Grenade,” marks his second single under the alias. It is scheduled to arrive on tech house Toolroom Records December 7th.

“Jack Back is David Guetta’s new alias and outlet for club records and ‘Grenade’ has found the perfect home on Toolroom,” reads a promo email from the Mark Knight-headed label. “This marks his second ever release under the brand new alias following on from ‘Sometimes’ on Defected [Records] earlier this year.”

In September, following speculation of Jack Back’s identity, Guetta revealed himself to be behind the underground house inspired alias in an interview with Pete Tong. “I originally started in underground house music, playing all the raves and underground clubs in Paris,” he said. “I wanted to make music just for fun, with absolutely no commercial approach to it. I want to make every type of music that I like, I’m doing it for the love of music.”

That announcement was coupled with a new Jack Back release, a 12-track mixtape of rhythmic, dynamically textured club grooves. The tracks were also promoted as a component of David Guetta’s mid-September album 7. While “Grenade” is available for streaming on both these works already, it’s notable seeing a robust tech house brand such as Toolroom taking interest in releasing “Grenade” as a single.

Home of artists such as Mark Knight, Weiss, Shiba San, and many more, the move by Toolroom to embrace Jack Back in such early stages is sure to cause some discourse among tech house purists. Few may remember that Guetta also had a Toolroom release titled “GRRR” on Toolroom way back in 2009 – around the same time he was breaking into the pop music mainstream.

Stream “Grenade” on Spotify today, and stay tuned for more to come from David Guetta’s Jack Back project.

Faul & Wad Team Up with Vertue for Shimmering "TOKYO" on Spinnin' Records

Drive into the city lights with Faul & Wad and Vertue on Spinnin’ Records.

While “faul” means “lazy” in German, Faul & Wad ‘s productions certainly don’t reflect such a trait. The French production duo have mastered out-of-the-box thinking with unorthodox studio tricks. “TOKYO” – their second Vertue collaboration on Spinnin’ Records – showcases their true colors and diversity.

“TOKYO” could easily have been a summer hit for its relatable, catchy vocals. Underlying production elements also evoke mental imagery of the Tokyo city lights. The energy continues through fun elements spaced perfectly throughout, counterbalancing Vertue’s memorable, pitched-up vocals.

Faul & Wad initially broke onto the scene with their PNAU 2014 collaboration “Changes.” The track was used in a Mercedes Benz commercial for the auto manufacturer’s C-Class line of vehicles. In addition, they’ve gone on to perform at the world’s most lavish festivals, including TomorrowWorld in the U.S., Pukkelpop in Belgium, and Solidays in France.

RÜFÜS DU SOL Releases “Lost In My Mind” Video Reflecting Their Trials to Success

Making it in the music industry is the ultimate dream for many. But from the outside looking in, we tend to only see the fairytale of it all. What we fail to recognize is what happens behind the curtain. RÜFÜS DU SOL’s latest music video reflects some of the trials that have come from their success, opening up a portal into the unspoken life that stems from fame. A life with pressure so vast, some artists have lost their lives.

Artists in the spotlight have a lifestyle consumed by an immense amount of pressure. Sleepless nights, traveling for months at a time and a constant demand for energy can take an emotional toll on even the most level headed of artists.

With the recent launch of their record label Rose Avenue, a world tour, and the release of their new album Solace, the Australian trio have had a profoundly successful year. However, their accomplishments have not been without sacrifice. To find inspiration for their music, they left everything behind to begin a new chapter in Los Angeles.

“Lost in My Mind” depicts the isolation and the burden that transpired from uprooting their life in the name of their art. The music video mirrors the song’s meaning effortlessly, taking viewers into the depths of their psyche. As they maneuvered through uncharted territory, both physical and emotional, they broke through barriers to newfound success. But those breakthroughs also came with emotional scarring and the video symbolizes their complex journey to the top. Check out the video below.

Okeechobee Officially Cancelled for 2019

It’s a sad day for Okeechobee lovers, the 2019 edition is officially cancelled. However, in their statement Team Okeechobee states that they’re planning on making a return in March of 2020. Their plan for returning in the spring time, right around spring break is to hopefully inflate their attendance numbers. Both 2016 and 2017 the festival sold out. Sadly, 2018 saw a slight decline in attendance.

There’s no exact reason as to why the festival won’t be returning in 2019. However, as previously written in another one of our Okeechobee articles, as of November 8 the festival had still not even applied for a permit for the 2019 festival.

Looking to the future, we are all hoping that the festival returns with a vengeance. Ask anyone that has attended in previous years and they’ll tell you it was one of their favorite festivals, if not their favorite one out there.

Check out Team Okeechobee’s official statement below:

50 Cent Playing Above & Beyond in a Maybach is Everything

Curtis Jackson, more famously known as 50 Cent, is living proof that hip-hop is as much a lifestyle as it is a type of music. He was a star in the underground mix-tape circuit for several years, but the rest of the world did not hear about him until 2002, when his first single, “Wanksta,” appeared on the ‘8 Mile‘ film soundtrackEveryone knows of 50 as the guy who grew up on the streets of New York, survived being shot nine times, and for his rags-to-riches life story.

Above & Beyond, on the other hand, a British trio, is one of the most successful trance acts of the 2000s. Above & Beyond is known for their production and remix work, as well as their DJ performances and record labels, Anjunabeats and AnjunadeepJono GrantTony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki are maestros at crafting that elevational moment of communal emotion with their beautiful compositions of music.

Surely, they’re an unlikely collaboration, right? Well, maybe not.

In a tweet yesterday, 50 Cent shared a video of the interior of his stunning new Mercedes-Maybach S650. The high-end details in the interior make up only a part of the vehicle’s special characteristics. The car itself goes 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds, includes a 6.0L bi-turbo V-12 engine, and equipped with 621 horsepower. It comes with a starting price tag of $198,700.

In a car like this, what would be the first song you’d play? For 50, it was Above & Beyond. Yup, that’s right. More specifically, it was “Cold Feet“, which features vocals from “Alright Now” collaborator, Justine Suissa. He even says himself, “this is the music you play in the Maybach”. It’s invigorating rhythm mixed with Justine’s soothing voice is truly perfect on its own. Imagine hearing it in a Maybach? makes this story even better is Paavo’s reply to the tweet saying, “nice music taste mate :)”. Does this mean a possible collaboration in the future? Probably not, but this made our, and definitely Paavo’s, day. We applaud your taste in music, 50.
