QUIX Takes ILLUSIONS to a Whole New Level [Interview]

QUIX talks about ILLUSIONS, the upcoming EP of its namesake, and how he’s giving a USB away of unreleased music.

Trap and bass music without a doubt has seen a significant spike within the United States in the past couple of years. Several artists have emerged from the underground with superb talent, one of whom goes by the stage name QUIX

The producer was born initially in Auckland, New Zealand and has been making a statement in the USA with his original sounds. QUIX got to sit down and talk a little about what fans can expect from his new ILLUSIONS tour, how it felt getting started in the music industry at the age of 14, and how to score an unreleased original QUIX banger on a golden USB.

You have a new track that you released off your upcoming new EP called “Giving Up.” featuring Jaden Michaels. What was the message you were trying to deliver with that track and title name?

QUIX: I was given the topline which had been previously written by Jaden – so I wasn’t involved with the delivery of the message in the lyrics, but I loved her vocal. The instrumental and working her vocal into a new banger was where I came in. She has a strong and powerful voice, and I wanted the production to match it and give off this magnificent sort of feeling.

Your ILLUSIONS tour comprises both U.S. and Canada dates. Are there any specific cities you’re genuinely looking forward to?

I’m very excited to play all of them! In every city I go to in the States I have fans waiting for me, so that is very encouraging. I’m especially excited for the show in Vancouver as it’s my birthday!

You just finished your spring tour, which took place in New Zealand and Australia. Any standout moments happened during that tour?

Going back home to New Zealand is always fun; there is just something special having your home cheering you on. I played Listen In and then again at the after party and Skrillex came B2B with me. That was a big moment for me. Australia is nuts and the crowds there is crazy! Aussie feels like a second home.

ILLUSIONS is not only the name of your tour, but also your upcoming EP. What illusions do you hope your fans and people who are attending the tour perceive?

We’re using the ILLUSIONS concept as a contradiction. I want people just to come as they are to my shows, it’s all about the music to me, and I want to be real and share music that we vibe to and can be that moment together. No ILLUSIONS, just music.

A video surfaced on  Facebook of you doing a B2B with Skrillex, which is enormous. What would your dream B2B look like, and you can have more than one artist?

Well, my dream was to play B2B with Skrillex! But another dream B2B would be Mr. Carmack b2b QUIX.

View the original article to see embedded media.

You started experimenting with music around nine years old and got into the dance music scene around the age of 14. What initially attracted you to dance music?

I was big into heavy metal which then followed into dubstep. Then that flowed into trap which automatically led into the hip-hop scene, and I haven’t left! I am always looking to explore and push new sounds and just be me.

If there was one thing, you could change about the music industry, what would be?

I love how music connects people, and if anything I hope that it keeps bringing people together through the good and the tough times.

Your collaboration with Boombox Cartel, “Supernatural” feat. Anjulie, has received several millions plays and tons of positive feedback. How did that collaboration come to be?

We have been friends for a long time and had been talking about making a track. When It was the right time I guess both our geniuses combined, and we struck gold!

If there was any other genre of music you would choose to get into more other than bass and trap, what would it be?

I love making really chill hip-hop beats. I love to relax and sleep while listening to them – I guess it puts me in a good mood.

The year is just about to wrap up, what are your plans for 2019?

More music and touring for sure! I don’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

Check the video down below to see how you can win a USB drive that will have an unreleased QUIX track that cannot be found anywhere else. Make sure to keep an eye out for his new EP, ILLUSIONS, dropping soon on Dim Mak.

The Mayor of Taipei Drops Insane Trap Music Video

The Mayor of Taipei, Ke Wenzhe, drops Trap Music Video

Yeah, you read that right. The Mayor of Taipei is hip and one with the times. The mayor, Ke Wenzhe, dropped a Trap Mandarin-language music video. Labeled “Do things right” in English, the song also features Taiwanese rapper Chunyan. At the beginning of the video, the mayor can be seen doing authoritative and legislative type work. But, as the video goes on Ke Wenzhe gets out of his chair and joins Chunyan. That’s when things get wild.

The Mayor is clearly trying to attract the younger population. And it is working! The reviews seem to be exceptional for the video and viewers love it. It already has over 1 million views. The mayor bumps along with the track and looks quite bad-ass doing it. He even throws in a few lines of his own making sure his listeners know to “do the right things.” He even has sample dialogue of his city council meetings echo in the background. Mayor Ke wrote a statement about the video:

“Now, I’m going to try to be a rapper. If you want to do something you don’t understand, it’s OK to give it a go. The opportunity is reserved for those who are willing to try.”

Personally, I love to see this type of political promotion. It is different from what we usually see and that’s what makes Mayor Ke stand out. I am sure he is going to have success going forward thanks to his new music video. Check out the video below! Also, check out his YouTube channel.

October's Top New Releases Are All About the Bass [Playlist]

Listen to Basstober’s new tracks in our top picks playlist!

Artists may have Inktober, but electronic dance music fans have what we here at call Basstober. October saw a ton of epic tracks spanning subgenres like big room, tropical house, trap, dubstep and house. With our variety of releases by both big names and rising talent alike, you’re bound to find some great songs that you can blast on your speakers to shake things up.

Here’s a teaser:

Last month the founder of Revealed Recordings, Hardwell, announced an indefinite hiatus from touring – but to the relief of his fans, he promised that he’d still be making and releasing music. This month alone he’s released a few tracks like “Out Of This Town” with VINAI, his own edit of Dada Life‘s “Do It Till Your Face Hurts,” and our bassy big room top pick, “Kicking It Hard.”

Moving up 12 places and landing at #19 on DJ Mag’s 2018 Top 100 DJs, Brazilian DJ Vintage Culture has been making waves with his latest tropical/deep house music. While his most recent release, “Feeling Good,” with Chemical Surf is packed with massively bassy beats, “I Will Find” with Rooftime is too good of a catchy tropical song to pass up.

This month, K?D finally released his debut EP, Paradise. Filled with electronic goodies, the whole album takes you on an immersive journey into his robotic/cyber world. The first and more mildly bassy track, “Electronic Memories,” with Mickey Kojak really does a great job in setting up the mood and theme of Paradise with its chilling sounds.

We can’t have Basstober without some bassy trap music – and we all know who to go to for that. Without fail Greek DJ and producer Aero Chord always hits us with some deep bassy drops in his hip-hop infused tracks. His latest track, “SVNSET” with Norman Perry accomplishes that and more.

He made it onto our top picks playlist for September with “U&ME” and he’s back again this month with something completely new for his music. South Korean DJ Justin OH finally released his first track with a vocalist, “Loving Her Loving U.” Coupled with glitchy dubstep drops, Delaney Kai‘s vocals really enhance the song and make it even darker.

Why don’t you drive your neighbors nuts and play some more loud bassy music from our October top picks playlist!

Diplo Teases Clip of New LSD Single "Mountains"

Labrinth, Sia and Diplo have teamed up on a new track under their LSD project.

Major Lazer may be going the way of the dinosaurs, but Diplo‘s latest supergroup looks to be more than a one-time endeavor. The Mad Decent label head has shared a sample clip of “Mountains,” his fourth collaboration with Labrinth and Sia as part of their LSD project.

“Mountains” sees Diplo (real name Thomas Wesley Pentz Jr.) defend his reputation as an EDM/pop crossover hitmaker. Vocals by Labrinth and Sia are accompanied by a rubbery sawtooth before the chorus gives way to a invigorating drop.

View the original article to see embedded media.

Labrinth (real name Timothy Lee McKenzie) may have began his music career as a producer, but in 2010 he signed to Simon Cowell‘s label, Syco Music. Sia (full name Sia Kate Isobelle Furler) likely needs no introduction. In addition to her prolific career in pop music, her contributions to “Titanium” by David Guetta made her a household name in the EDM world.

The three artists debuted as LSD back in May of 2018 with the release of “Genius.” In the months since, they followed up the single with songs titled “Audio” and “Thunderclouds.”

“Mountains” by LSD will arrive by way of Columbia Records tomorrow, November 1st of 2018. Earlier in the year the trio revealed plans to release a debut album titled Labrinth/Sia/Diplo present … LSD on November 2nd.

[Interview] Throttle Shares About New Release and Craziest DJ Moments

Between the craziness of Amsterdam Dance Event parties, Throttle took the time to answer some of our questions about his new release ‘Wanderlust’ on Spinnin’ Records and more. The Australian DJ/producer, who’s known for his killer throwback remakes and funk induced future house hits, took a bold new direction with ‘Wanderlust’ that proved to be extremely rewarding. He talked about his original influences that continue to inspire him as well as the emotional direction he took for this song. On top of that, we got a chance to ask about some of his craziest DJ moments and what life is like with such a large fanbase.

Can you tell us about your new release and what inspired it?

Sure, it’s called Wanderlust. It was released last Friday. It’s probably the most emotional song I’ve done to date, I’d say.

It’s a little bit different vibes than what you usually do, yeah?

It is, yeah. It’s still got that funky vibe but it’s certainty more emotional than a lot of good stuff I’ve done in the past. And that’s kind of the vibe we’re focusing on now is more emotional stuff.

Nice, is there any particular reason for that?

It’s just kind of the music I’m into right now and that’s the stuff that I really love. Which is the more Madeon, when I started producing, that got me into more emotional stuff.

Would you say he’s one of your bigger influences?

Yeah, I mean maybe not now but when I first started.

Who were some of your other influencers too?

Tons, most of mine are actually out side of the EDM world, to be honest. Like Billie Eilish, love. Anything kind of in that world, I guess. SZA, I love too, more R&B, of course. In the electronic world, I guess Madeon and Porter, two big influences. I love Rezz.

How many times do you listen to your same track before you end up release it?

A thousand.

Do ever get so sick of your track, or like “I hate this now”?

Yeah, I find that if a song’s good enough to listen to a thousand times and still be able to bare it, then it’s good enough to put out. Even if you get insecure about it in the end, if you listen to any song a thousand times over, it’s going to change in your ears, but if you still like listening to it and there’s something that surprises you, it is good to release.

Who are your main people you go to for feedback, when you are too much in your head?

Don Diablo I send a lot of stuff too, Oliver Heldens, Kungs cause we have a song together of course, CID all the time.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you, when you’re on tour or been djing?

Probably the police shutting down a frat party. That was last August, I think, FIJI at Georgia Tech. I was playing at their frat house and I lasted 40 minutes I think, before the police shut it down. It was insane… Like an undercover cop, who was underaged came in, saw that there was underaged drinking. So, the cop was, I don’t know, 19 or 20 and started arresting the bartenders. Shut the whole thing down.

It was on fight night too, like McGregor. It was insane and they shut the whole thing down. The guy comes up to me and is like “turn it off”. I was like, uh….

So naturally, you turned it up?

Haha no I was like, “I’ll turn it down a little bit” and he’s literally like “No, cut it now!” Cause it was in a frat house, so the frat house was shaped like this, with balconies on each side aAnd then there’s blue and red lights like around the whole thing. I was like, “oh, s***.”

Alright, what is the craziest thing, when you think of crazy, that a fan has said to you?

I haven’t had too many crazy things, honestly. I mean, I get drawings, which is nice. No, I mean nothing really crazy, honestly, mostly kind of nice stuff. Maybe I’m not one of the fav to get like a finger nail or something. Haha I don’t know what people get. I’ve heard of people who have gotten a hair before.

What are your pet peeves in the music industry?

In the music industry, I would say people not exploring when they make music. Like as in, is they just staying very much with the format. Especially when you tour you see, and I feel like people who are big have such a big platform. They’re able to create music that’s different, but I feel like people often get lazy.

Do you ever feel pressured to stay within the format?

No, I don’t think so. I feel like I just have a bit of a duty to make music that’s outside of the box and I feel like we all do. Just to push the boundaries, otherwise, with dance music will just forever stay where it is.

Are you ever afraid to push boundaries?

No, I don’t think so. I mean I’ve seen sometimes, what a bad influence when I do, but yeah it’s worth it, I think. Keeps me sane.

If you were going to collab with anyone right now, who would it be? EDM and Non-EDM

Skrillex for sure and Billie Eilish.

deadmau5’s mau5ville: Level 2 Track List Has Been Leaked

Back in July, deadmau5 collaborated with some of his favourite artists to create a new compilation: mau5ville: Level 1. It featured two new deadmau5 songs, a handful of killer remixes, and new originals from GTA and Getter.

The release of this album also featured his first collaboration with Rob Swire in almost ten years, ‘Monophobia‘, which had fans desperate for more music. In the rumour mill, Chinese streaming platform, Netease Cloud Music, reported that the album was expected to drop on September 23rd, along with a world tour announcement. Clearly, this is was only a rumour, but now, it seems that the Canadian producer is not wasting any time in readying the next outing.

According to the r/deadmau5 reddit page, the track list mau5ville: Level 2 has leaked. From the leak, Level 2 looks like a perfect and original mau5 masterpiece. “Drama Free” features deadmau5’s fellow Canadian singer-songwriter, Lights. The track was originally teased by deadmau5 himself, on both Twitter and Twitch. And if that wasn’t enough, the song then gets its very own remix by Chris Lorenzo, who originally remixed the classic mau5 track, “Raise Your Weapon“.

“mau5ville: Level 2” Tracklist (UPDATED) from r/deadmau5

Although it seems like the highly anticipated, ‘Midas’ Heel‘, may not be on this album, speculation has gathered that it may be released under a different song name: Drama Free (Instrumental Mix). Whether or not this is true, if this leak is legit, another long awaited song, ‘GG‘ will finally be released, and we can’t wait.

In this video it seems Midas’s Heel has been renamed to Drama Free from r/deadmau5

// the looks of it, this album will definitely be a classic. Although no release date has officially been set, the anticipation is definitely real.

Laidback Luke, Dirtyphonics and More Want to Play a "USB Roulette" Party Hosted by Snails

Everyone’s a DJ until they have to play from someone else’s song library.

Right when it seems like every party concept has been done, Snails may have come up with the next big thing. The “vomitstep” innovator has proposed an idea he calls “USB ROULETTES” (we suspect he may have meant “roulette”) and some of EDM’s heaviest hitters have already offered to participate.

As Snails (real name Frédérik Durand) tweeted last night, a game of USB roulette would begin with each participating DJ loading up a USB flash drive with songs and putting it in a bucket. Each artist must then draw a random stick from the bunch and build an entire set from the tracks at their disposal.

The concept has gained traction (literally) overnight. Dirtyphonics, Ekali and JSTJR are among the bass music acts who have expressed interest in performing at the unorthodox event. Even artists like Laidback Luke and Felix Cartal have reached across the EDM aisle to let Durand know they want in.

Novelty aside, USB Roulette has the potential to backfire. The challenge it poses may succeed in separating real DJs from their press-play counterparts, but likely at the expense of the audience’s experience.

If Durand does his due diligence to curate a lineup of capable selectors, however, then his brainchild may have legs yet. After all, nowadays technical difficulties have forced any experienced DJ to improvise a set entirely from somebody else’s music at one time or another.

Durand has also proposed that any DJ who can’t complete their set must donate their booking fee to Electric Family. He has yet to confirm a date or location for the first-ever USB Roulette match at the time of writing.

Knife Party – Sleaze (No Mana & i_o Remix)

Knife Party – Sleaze (No Mana & i_o Remix)

No Mana and i_o have collaborated on a remix of ‘Sleaze’ by Knife Party, offering up a brilliant club beat perfect for Hallowe’en. Wildly different from the original, the remix is transformed into a dark, pulsing tech piece.

“Until they kick us out” is the resonating lyric that connects the remix to the original, repeated over and over like a dance floor mantra. Unfortunately the comments from i_o’s official Soundcloud page reveal some drama between himself and fellow mau5trap artist No Mana.

i_o shade

The comments from i_o regarding the remix indicate that No Mana has little to do with the actual piece except merely add his name to the release.

i_o shade

The track itself doesn’t sound specifically like either artist; both have experience with techno beats and could have lent a hand to the ‘Sleaze’ remix. Listen for yourself below and let us know what you think.

VAVO Shows Us Why "Right Now" Is Their Time to Shine

VAVO releases new track under NYC-based Kess Records, “Right Now.”

Alden Martin and Jesse Fischer, the two artists comprising EDM/pop duo VAVO, had been working together for over a year before they met in person. With roots in Great Britain and Canada, the two did not let distance stop them from pursuing their dreams. The duo’s hit single, “Sleeping Alone,” appeared on the Billboard Dance Charts at #38 as well as the BPM Top 20 Countdown. VAVO is now back with their most recent track, “Right Now” featuring Caroline Kole, that came out on October 23rd on Kess Records.

The track kicks off with lovely and elegant lyrics by Kole and a whimsical beat in the background. Even though the warm season is over, it’s hard to listen to this track and not think of the beautiful summer sun and sky. The vocals blend well with the soft, radio-friendly drop.

“Right Now” was premiered on Sirius XM’s BPM radio station shortly before and VAVO hosted a sold-out Halloween release party at Vandal in NYC. VAVO continues to gain popularity among EDC fans and has even been featured in publications like Billboard. Right now is the time for VAVO to share their musical talent with the world.
