Octopuses Were Given MDMA & They Started Cuddling

Scientists had octopuses try the drug MDMA and it made them start hugging.

Warning: This is cute as hell. Octopuses are one of the unique sea creatures that are known for being antisocial. They prefer to be alone unless they have to mate with others. When it’s not mating season, they are pretty unpleasant to be around. If you left two of them together, they would most likely fight.

On the contrary, if they are given the drug MDMA, they become extremely affectionate with each other. We swear. Scientists tested the mood enhancer on the octopuses and they started to hug… just like humans.

Gül Dölen, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at John Hopkins University in Maryland:

“Why on earth would you not be interested in what happens when octopuses take MDMA?”

Seriously though, she’s got a point. Dölen and her team were dying to know what would happen and if there was a universality with brain mechanics. If the social drug had a positive effect on antisocial animals, there must similarities with the anatomy of the brain. Scientists chose “octopus bimaculoides’ as the guinea pigs because their genome closely matches a humans’ by 60-70 percent.

The octopuses were first placed in a tank with toys. One had to be in a flower pot in the tank to avoid aggression. They migrated to their toys and ignored each other. Then they were placed in a container with liquified MDMA for 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, the MDMA was expected to hit and they were placed back in the tank. To the scientists’ prediction, the octopuses ditched the toys and gravitated towards each other. Scientists observed the creatures were uptight before the drug. After the drug, they seemed extremely relaxed and open.

“Before the MDMA, they were very reserved. They had their arms bunched in. After the MDMA, they were super relaxed, touching and putting their mouths on everything, and hugging the flower pot with the octopus inside. They were in a total cuddle puddle.”

There has been a wave of new research studied being done on MDMA and psychedelic drugs to treat PTSD. We hope MDMA will be a legal prescription drug in the near future.

Diplo Interviews RL Grime & It’s Pretty Awesome

rl grime diplo

In an enlightening and heartwarming Youtube video posted by RL Grime to his channel Thursday, we see the talented artist sit down and chat with non-other than industry veteran Diplo.

The two artists go through and recap their many years in the music industry together, and talk through what has made RL Grime the internationally acclaimed trap artist that he is today.

RL Grime recalls his first time working with Diplo and releasing some of his early tracks on Mad Decent, the music label that Diplo founded.  As RL Grimes puts it, “that was like a big thing for me…putting out a record on a label that you loved when you were younger is like a big deal for sure.”

We also see him and Diplo talk about his transition from his former DJ persona Clockwork, who was known for big room house, to the RL Grimes stage name and trap-focused music that he is known for today.

He states, “I remember it very specifically, it was EDC maybe 2013 or 2014, and I was playing a Clockwork set. And I had a full panic attack when I was playing, because I was like, ‘Oh, shit, I just hate this music. I don’t wanna play this.’ I remember right after I finished the set, I was like, ‘I don’t wanna do this anymore.’”

The two artists then contemplate the delicate balance of playing popular songs on live sets versus putting in more nuanced and expressive new music. As Diplo states, “it’s still a job for us” when referencing the need to deliver crowd-pleasing songs over the freedom DJs want to express their more creative and artistic side.

The two also go into depth on RL Grime’s second studio album, Nova, which he released late July of this year. Diplo is clearly a fan of the DJ, as he praises and goes into depth on his thoughts of the songs in the album.

Check out the full 20-minute version of the uplifting conversation below:

10 Reasons Missing Dirtybird Campout West Coast is NOT an Option

It’s less than one week until the start of Dirtybird Campout West Coast. Early Arrival begins Thursday, October 4th and the birds are already starting to migrate to Northern California in anticipation. With sold out GA tier tickets, it’s sure to be a packed event. And Dirtybird is adding a bit of new flair to this event as they settle into a new location for the fourth installment of Campout. In anticipation of next weekend, we put together a list of ten reasons why any fan of underground house and techno simply cannot afford to miss this event.

10. California

For those Birds not native to the West Coast, this trip presents an exciting opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. Although you may be travelling to Cali to shake your booty to some house music, don’t miss this opportunity to explore San Francisco or some of the National Parks in Norcal.

9. Team Events and Field Games

One of the most distinct features of Dirtybird Campout is the Field Games that take place during the festival. Make sure to head over to the Games HQ, find out your team color, grab a bandana and get out and play! Whether you like kickball, badminton or cornhole, your team needs your help to win. You’ll even get a custom Dirtybird patch for participating! Will the Green Team take the win two Campouts in a row?

8. Activities

Like the field games, the non-physical activities at Dirtybird Campout are part and parcel of the experience. Go make a custom tye dye with Mikey Lion or hit up the totem workshop so all your friends can find you in the crowd. But make sure you get there early, the lines for the most popular activities are always long!

7. The Bunkhouse

The third piece of the unique experience called Dirtybird Campout is the undeniably exciting Bunkhouse! A performance area dedicated to all sorts of non-musical artistic endeavors, you’ll find some of the most unique experiences here. From a talent show to a comedy showcase there’s nothing like The Bunkhouse anywhere else. Don’t miss the drag show or the online group meetup with FREE BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER!

6. New Location – Modesto Reservoir Campgrounds

New is always exciting and that goes for venue changes as well! This is the first time Dirtybird Campout will be held at the Modesto Reservoir Campgrounds which means it will be a brand new experience for everyone involved. Check out the detailed map provided by the Dirtybird Team and figure out the layout of the grounds before you get too involved in the festivities. Big ups to Jmmy Jmmy on Facebook for walking the grounds beforehand to give everyone a better idea of the size and travel time across the Reservoir.

5. Swimming!

For the first time EVER Campers will be able to swim at Dirtybird Campout!! At East Coast Campout attendees were warned to stay away from the water. There were even signs posted advising campers about the danger of alligators in the swamp. But the Modesto Reservoir is completely alligator free! So feel free to dip your toes in and relax!

4. Silent Disco

Another big first for the Dirtybird Team is the late night Silent Disco! Although sound ordinances prevent the stages and renegade sound camps from staying open all night, it wouldn’t be a Dirtybird party if it ended at 2 A.M. From 2:30-5:30 enjoy a 3 channel Silent Disco featuring some of your favorite Dirtybird artists and surprise guests!

3. Trading Goodies

It wouldn’t be a Campout without lots of Birdfam trading their custom Dirtybird creations. From patches to stickers to bracelets and more, swapping crafts and the memories that go with them is one of the best ways to meet new friends! It may be too late to order patches or stickers but get your creative juices flowing and figure out something unique and personal to bring and trade! You won’t regret it! Thanks to Tony Contreras and his friends who will be handing out these beauties during Campout!

2. The Artists AKA Camp Counselors

Everyone dreams of meeting their favorite artists at a festival. Well at Campout you’ll be hard pressed NOT to meet several of your favorite DJs. Sure you’ll see them on stage but they also host all the games, activities and Bunkhouse events. But don’t be surprised if you turn around and see Claude VonStroke in the crowd partying harder than anyone else in the place. These guys got there because they love the music so expect them to enjoy it as well!

1. The Dirtybird Family

Above all the biggest and best reason for you never to miss a Campout is the Dirtybird Family as a whole. From the moment you step onto the campgrounds expect to be treated like family by everyone involved. Loving, caring and supporting one another is a huge part of this festival. Be nice, be genuine, be responsible, and you’ll be greeted with open arms. There is no group on earth that is more welcoming and open than the community built around the Dirtybird movement.

MSG Sphere Officially Underway in Las Vegas

MSG Sphere in Las VagasThe ground has officially been broken on MSG Sphere in Las Vegas. The 18,000 seat venue will be located near Sands’ Venetian and Palazzo Complex. It is expected to open in 2021. The innovative arena is looking to forever change the experience of traditional live performances.

The exterior will be a 350-foot round dome that is fully programmable to visualize a number of things from the earth itself to the surrounding skylines. The interior might be even more remarkable than the outside. It will not only feature a spherical display pane but have a state of the art “beam-forced” sound transmission with an “infrasound” haptic flooring systems. That is a lot of fancy words. Basically, you will be able to feel every vibration the sound produces thanks to thousands of tiny speakers embedded in the walls. The beam-forming acoustic system will produce customized sounds for each member in the audience.

Rendering of Daft Punk performing at MSG Sphere

Why does this matter to EDM fans? The BASS of course. We will be able to experience the bass more than ever before through the floor system. We can only begin to imagine the what-if scenarios. I am sure plenty of DJs would like to perform at the sphere causing rejoice to all ravers. And as EDC week rolls around, there will be plenty of artists in the area.

We are very excited about MSG Sphere to be completed and experience dance music like never before. Imagine having the opportunity to listen to your favorite DJ while being mesmerized by amazing visuals. Sounds pretty amazing to me. To see the video of ground officially being broken click here.

Life Is Beautiful Puts On A Spectacular Festival Once Again [ Event Review]

Life is Beautiful Festival made it’s annual return this year for it’s sixth time to transform Downtown Las Vegas into an Art and Musical wonderland for enthusiasts of both worlds. Boasting multiple murals all over the streets of Downtown Vegas and with music coming from all directions from the various stages available, it surely cements its place as one of the festivals worth looking into.

I had the pleasure of being able to partake in this year’s festivities and there’s so much to touch on regarding this beautiful festival so we’ll start from the beginning with the first sights you’re introduced to as you walk in, all the amazing art.

Art & Murals

As you first head inside the festival, you can’t help but find yourself running into the all the amazing art and murals multiple talented artists worked countless hours on to bring to life for the event.

Take a look at some of the pieces displayed below!

Life is Beautiful Life is Beautiful Life is Beautiful

Music & Stages

Over the weekend I trekked along from stage to stage catch artists and performers from multiple genres and while there were various stages located around downtown, I managed to check out a few of the main ones.

Downtown Stage

One of the artists I was able to catch at the Downtown Stage was DJ Snake and he did not disappoint. As one of the closers for the final day of the event, the French producer pulled out all the stops making sure festival goers got one last epic experience before heading home for the night and concluding the event altogether. DJ Snake dropped countless bangers that had the crowd going wild and had everyone jumping around.

Fremont Stage

This stage will look familiar to past EDC veterans and Coachella attendees as it’s another megastructure that packs in a ton of people but at the cost of things getting hot fast. Staying hydrated is a must throughout the entirety of the event but it was especially crucial at this particular stage.

Here, I was able to catch an artist that has been nothing short of amazing and has been consistently killing it as of recently, Alison Wonderland. The talented Australian music producer even brought her cello along for her performance and absolutely nailed it when she took the stage with it. She also proceeded to drop some bass loaded tracks that had everyone feeling the rumble throughout the megastructure and even had the crowd singing along to her lyrics as well. Definitely, a must catch set if you ever have the opportunity to do so.

BACARDI #SoundOfRum Stage

The Bacardi #SoundOfRum stage was another location where some amazing performances took place one of which I had the pleasure of witnessing happened to be the brilliant electronic duo, ODESZA.

The American electronic band took the stage and put on a beautiful show that caught every one of your senses with their incredible visuals, the loud drums, and captivating melodies. They weren’t alone as well as they brought along with them a drumline hailing from Nevada and were joined by LA singer-songwriter Naomi Wild and more as well.

Final Thoughts

Everything you have seen is just a glimpse of what Life is Beautiful offers to festival goers, there are still a few other stages and not to mention the comedy shows that also took place throughout the weekend. The festival also offers various culinary experiences throughout the event for attendees to try out as well.

This festival is truly special because it literally transforms Downtown Las Vegas into a weekend full of multiple experiences that appeal to all the masses. This festival also helps with the reshape and revival of Downtown Vegas as even after the festival wraps up many of the murals are still left behind to give downtown a beautiful artistic touch to appeal to tourists and locals alike. A win-win for all in my eyes.

If you have the opportunity to experience this festival, I truly recommend it as I had the pleasure of having an unforgettable weekend and I’m positive you will too!

Life is Beautiful is set to return next year on September 20th-22nd, we will be sure to keep you all updated when early ticket sales take place.

Naliya and 5ALVO Make Us Say "Fuck" That's Good

Artist to watch!

Canadian producer and vocalist, Naliya is back with the help of Boston-based producer, 5ALVO, on their new track “Fuck“. This young artist is one to watch. Not only does she write her own lyrics, sing with that enchanting voice, but she also creates an insane quality production.

The pop/future bass track “Fuck” features minimally produced verses followed by a playful and energetic drop. That arpeggio though!

Lyrically, the song explores the frustration of being unable to move on from a relationship. An exclamation of defeat we all know and love so much…FUCK.

Keep an eye and ear out for this one. I expect big things.

Dabin and Fytch Unite For New Single "Altitude"

Two artists souring to new heights

Guitar-wielding producer Dabin and the young French breakout producer, Fytch have joined forces on “Altitude”, an atmospheric chill-bass track that is sure to take you higher.

The blend of electronic and acoustic elements makes this track mesmerizing. The airy vocals are both melodically catchy and sonically riveting. The best description I have is it sounds as if your ears are being hugged by a big comfy blanket. Lot’s of feels going on with this one.

With Dabin exploring new territories as the guitarist for Illenium’s Awake band, as well as tour support for k?d and Fytch coming off tour support for REZZ and DROELOE, these talents are looking to take over the rest of 2018 and beyond.
