Claptone Hits Corona Electric Beach: Exclusive Interview

Hailing from Berlin, Germany, the masked DJ known only as Claptone is set to headline the first edition of Corona Electric Beach in 2018. This 21+ event on January 13th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL is free to attend if you RSVP online ahead of time.

Corona’s traveling event series brings “beats to the beach” with some of the biggest names in dance music, and they are kicking off a new year with the top ranked house DJ in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll. EDMTunes got an exclusive interview with the mysterious entertainer who talked about what house music means to him, his incredibly busy tour schedule, and surprises for his Corona Electric Beach performance, including tracks from a new album.

Claptone Corona Electric Beach Interview

The name Claptone has become synonymous with white gloves, a top hat and of course the intriguing golden mask. Could you explain the significance behind the mask and what it means to you?

Claptone: I do hope that my fans and friends around the globe use their ears more-so than their sense of sight. Believe it or not, I am a musician and not a swimwear model.
House music is a very spiritual thing for people all over the world. It means different things to different people. You’ve been voted the highest House artist on the 2017 DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll at # 69 AND you have won the Ibiza DJ Award for House music the last three years in a row! What does House music mean to you?
Trends in music come and go year after year, but somehow, house music keeps on kicking. Twisting, turning, rebirthing and readjusting, it continuously takes on new forms and styles, while retaining the groove that seems to be eternal. Virtuosity and theory take a back seat to emotion and feeling – unbridled creativity. Incredible things seems to happen when a bass drum meets a baseline. How I love it dearly. But then again I love music as a whole.
Jazz is also a very spiritual musical style. Your remix of Gregory Porter’s ‘Liquid Spirit’ is credited for the commercial success of Porter’s album.  What connections do you see between Jazz and House music and how does it feel to know your work supported Gregory Porter and his success?

In the studio and in my DJ sets, I look to create a melting kaleidoscope of influences and styles. I am of the opinion that good music is good music, regardless of what genre that others place it in. In my remix work I connected with acts as diverse as Pet Shop Boys, Gorillaz, Gregory Proter, Faithless and The Wombats to name just a few. I dare to say I am responsible for all their worldwide success, or am I?

You must be one of the most booked artists in the world right now. Your tour schedule is INSANE! You have 5 shows in the last 2 days of the year, and they are all over the world! You’ll be traveling from the U.S. to Germany to Indonesia, back to the U.S. and finally to Colombia. How do you keep up your energy and stamina? A secret Claptone workout routine and diet?

Growing up, my mother told me that if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life. It turns out that she was correct. Mindmelt, timetravel, private jets and champagne help as well.

On January 13th you’ll be in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for Corona Electric Beach at America’s Backyard. CEB has hosted names like Felix Da Housecat, Chocolate Puma and Shiba San. How do you feel to be chosen to headline their first event of 2018? Without giving too much away, what can we expect from your set at Corona Electric Beach? Any new collabs or remixes in the work that might be finished by the new year?

2017 was a year that I will not soon forget, however I am incredibly excited to jump into 2018 with even more energy. Truth be told, I have a special place in my heart for Florida. Lovely people, perfect weather and vibrant sunsets that seem to last forever. This coming year will bring a new Album from yours truly, many songs and tracks, some of which I will test out at Corona Electric Beach.

Everyone knows you’re a House music producer out of Berlin, but that’s about all we know. Wouldn’t it be a great New Years surprise for your fans to reveal your identity in this interview? 😉

They call me CLAPTONE.

If you’re in the Ft. Lauderdale area, don’t forget to RSVP to this free show! Start your new year off right with Claptone at Corona Electric Beach on January 13th. The event runs from 2-8 PM at America’s Backyard.

Darude Shares ‘Waiting For Winter’ Remix Video

Gabriel & Dresden feat. Jan Burton- Waiting For Winter (Darude Remix)

It has certainly been an exciting year for trance legends Gabriel & Dresden. On December 15th, they released their first album in eleven years called The Only Road. They just opened for Above & Beyond in Los Angeles and have more tour stops to follow in 2018. And with more tour stops, will come more new music… even a remix from ‘Sandstorm’ maestro Darude.

Yesterday, Darude shared a video of his remix on Gabriel & Dresden’s ‘Waiting For Winter’. What’s interesting here is both artists have recently made a comeback on to the scene. In the video, which is close to two and half hours long, goes through each part of the track while Darude explains what he did to certain parts of the song. The remix gives ‘Waiting For Winter’ an energetic twist that’s covered with strong trance synths. The release date hasn’t been confirmed, but by judging the video, it should be out soon. Check out Darude’s remix video below.

EDMTunes 2018 Predictions

edmtunes 2018 predictions As 2018 begins, it is time for us to make our predictions about the year ahead. Our article on the big trends of 2017 accounted for producers entering the pop realm, the popularity of aliases and the rise of psytrance. There are so many moving pieces in the dance music scene that it is hard to be certain what exactly will happen. But we have three big guesses about what you can expect in 2018.

1. Dominance of Boutique Labels/Festivals

As the large festival scene reaches its limit, smaller, more focused labels and festivals are popping up. And their fans are intense. Both Dirtybird Records and Desert Hearts Records are making waves in the American scene. Desert Hearts, led by Mikey Lion, preaches the mantra House. Techno. Love. The Crew hosts a yearly Desert Hearts Festival in the Desert and recently hosted a City Hearts Festival in downtown L.A. Led by Claude VonStroke, Dirtybird focuses on a “tech funk” sound. Their Dirtybird Campout blends a music festival with a summer camp for a unique experience. These labels that focus on feel-good sounds and eclectic events are really catching fire.

2. More DJs as TV/Movie/YouTube Stars

As EDM culture and DJs become more popular, shows like ‘What Would Diplo Do?’ start to appear. With DJs like MarshmelloHardwell, and Skrillex becoming household names, production studios are starting to see profitability. Whether it’s on television, in the movies, or on a YouTube series, don’t be surprised if your favorite DJ is the topic.

3. Tiesto Returns To Trance

Anyone who remembers Tiesto‘s earlier years knows that he can produce incredible trance. On his own or as half of Gouryella with Ferry Corsten, Tiesto was known specifically for his Trance music. As trance continues to rise in popularity around the world, many artists are beginning to produce it again. Arty‘s Alpha 9 alias is a perfect example. Will Tiesto be tempted to return to his roots?

What will really be the big stories of 2018? Only time will tell.

Atlantic Records Has Labeled Albums As Mixtapes To Avoid Paying Artists

Recording Producer Eric Dan of the Pittsburgh area is accusing Atlantic Records of intentionally labeling full length albums as something different, like a “street album” or “commercial mixtape” to avoid having to pay out the full fee to artists and producers.

He referred to a project he did with Wiz Khalifa as one example in an interview with BeatStars:

“The Khalifa album, I don’t know what they called it, a ‘street album?’ They came up with some really clever name that essentially meant, ‘Everyone involved, your going to get paid half what you normally do.’ I’ve seen it happen often over the last few years. Anything to save a buck for these labels.”

The same scenario occurred with Dan in 2013 with a release by Snow Tha Product. Dan said they called it a mixtape, which he described as their way of not paying me a whole lot.”

It’s unlikely Atlantic Records is the only major label doing this, as saving costs is a completely normal aspect of everyday business. But if artists and producers are being taken advantage of, this should not be acceptable. Other artists have also commented that they have had similar experiences with other labels as well, not only Atlantic.

Wixen Files $1.6B Copyright Lawsuit Against Spotify

On the last business day of 2017, Wixen Music Publishing Inc. filed a lawsuit against Spotify to the tune of $1.6 billion. Unhappy with the proposed settlement in Ferrick et a. v. Spotify USA Inc. et al. of $43 million, Wixen has opted to remove their Works due to inadequate compensation.

“Wixen is an independent music publisher that was formed in 1978 by Randall Wixen. Widen administers more than 50,000 songs written and/or owned by its more than 2,000 clients, including songs by some of the most popular and acclaimed musical artists of the last 100 years.”

The lawsuit begins by stating that Spotify willfully infringes the copyrights of Wixen’s musican compositions. “Spotify has repeatedly failed to obtain necessary statutory, or “mechanical,” licenses to reproduce and/or distribute musical compositions on its service.”

Known for representing such artists at Neil Young, Styx, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott and the Beach Boys, Wixen is the exclusive licensee of thousands of incredibly popular songs. It is the sole organization capable of signing agreements and asserting artists’ rights with companies such as Spotify.

According to Wixen, music in its catalogue has “been streamed and/or downloaded billions of times through Spotify’s Service.” The way Spotify allegedly pushed ahead with a U.S. launch was to sign deals with record labels to obtain the rights to the sound recordings. This does not include licensing the rights to the compositions, and it is here that Wixen takes issue. Songs have two copyrights, and the rights to the recording only pay the label, whereas the licensing for the composition pays the songwriters and their publishers.

Wixen is seeking full relief under the United States Copyright Act for the maximum amount of $150,000 per composition, totaling $1,617,600,000, as well as the recovery of attorney’s fees, and pre- and post-judgement interest. There is an added request for injunctive or declaratory relief requiring Spotify to “(a) develop and implement procedures for identifying and properly licensing songs and (b) pay for the services of a third party auditor to identify the owners of songs reproduced and/or distributed by Spotify despite Spotify’s failure to first obtain a mechanical license prior to reproducing and/or distributing the Works.”

Above & Beyond are absolutely amazing at what they do, they know how to put on a show like no other and they know exactly how to tug at your heartstrings whenever they so choose. But most importantly, they know how to throw a party, and they proved that once again on the first date of their all new Common Ground tour in Los Angeles at the LA Convention Center.

Things were kicked off with support from Spencer Brown, Grum & Gabriel & Dresden, who all put on phenomenal performances and got the crowd alive and really vibing out for the first three hours of the event. They filled the entire venue with bass pumping tracks and electrifying beats making everyone feel amazing and right at home as they got the A&B faithful ready and warmed up for what was coming next.
