Lollapalooza Talent and Organizers Prove Adaptive Amid Changing Electronic Landscape [Event Review]

Industry veterans and newcomers alike delivered top-tier performances at Lollapalooza 2018.

Last weekend, Chicago hosted Grant Park’s late summer staple as an expected 100,000 fans gathered daily for Lollapalooza. Though the lineup was initially met with mixed feelings from Lolla’s core crowd of rock and alternative purists, the festival has proved to be adaptive in continuing to curate top-notch talent and highly anticipated newcomers across all genres.

In recent years, Lollapalooza’s electronic offering has grown exponentially, and 2018 saw the festival continue to bet on mainstay DJ’s and producers as well as cutting-edge live sets. Named after Lolla’s co-founder Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, Perry’s stage continued to run like a well-oiled machine hosting a myriad of producers who continued to pull strong audiences throughout the sweltering heat. Headliners Zedd, Dillon Francis, and Galantis fed Chicago’s appetite for main stage music, while a vastly bass-oriented undercard had audiences head-banging the day away. Chicago continues to demonstrate a strong interest in trap, dubstep, and the generally grittier side of electronic music and Lolla’s producers were ready with a heavy dose. The who’s who of bass music was in attendance with performances by Rezz, What So Not, Zomboy, Malaa, Ekali and many more.

While the industry’s leading names alone may have piqued strong interest, it was up to the performers themselves to create memorable moments in the spotlight. To that point, Lolla’s producers seemed to take a much stronger position this year in creating these moments especially compared to year’s past. Concurrent with the industry’s greater focus on featured vocalists and original songwriting, producers seized the opportunity to incorporate these live elements into their sets. Kayzo, who first attended Lollapalooza seven years ago and vowed to one day play the festival, made his debut on Thursday and invited Papa Roach‘s Jacoby Shaddix to the stage for a surprise cover of “Last Resort.” Meanwhile, Daya who played earlier in the day on Sunday joined Illenium to perform their 2017 hit “Feel Good.” What So Not sent his fans into a frenzy after dropping confetti and hundreds of inflatables into the crowd on Sunday evening. Needless to say, these elements of surprise were warmly welcomed by Lolla attendees, who were left singing their praises.

Similarly continuing from recent memory, the trend of live electronic sets continued to percolate outside of Perry’s stage and onto Lolla’s main stages. With the appeal of live electro-pop sweeping the US festival circuit, acts such as Chicago’s own Autograf, Big Wild, and Chvrches have shown their staying power, leaving audiences hanging on their every word. The indisputable highlight, however, was Sunday’s closing headliner Odesza. With cinematic landscapes and visuals, a full drum line and horn section, and several of their collaborating vocalists joining them on stage, it’s no surprise the Seattle based duo is widely considered among the best live experiences within the global festival scene today. As the last act, many Lolla goers saw on Sunday, the somewhat indescribable spectacle was the perfect capstone to the Midwest’s biggest celebration of music.

With the music industry at large in a constant state of flux, adaptability will forever be an attractive attribute in this field. Now with 27 years of Lollapalooza in the books, the C3 team continues to demonstrate that their understanding of the macro level trends currently driving audiences has never been stronger. With a continued pulse on the stars of tomorrow, Lollapalooza is uniquely positioned to remain the Midwest’s premier music festival in the years to come.

Bass Artist Teri Miko Debuts New Pop-Influenced Sound on "Feels Real" with Madoc & Elle Vee [Listen]

Miko and Madoc take on a new sound

Prominent Indian artists Teri Miko and Madoc may be known for their ability to produce a vicious bass line, but they break new ground with expert execution on their latest track “Feels Real” on Spinnin’ Premium. Miko and Madoc team up with vocalist Elle Vee – who boasts a collaboration resume including Benny Benassi, Dzeko & Torres, Paris Blohm.

For “Feels Real,” which features organic instrumentals, a delicate and cinematic drop, and raw lyrics. Vee’s silky vocals give life to Miko and Madoc’s lush productions, conveying the story of longing for something genuine in a world of superficiality.

This is quite the change of pace from Miko’s discography, showing a much gentler side to the artist.

“I’m super nervous and excited at the same time to release different music. People who love me got used to the dark, heavy stuff and here we are…releasing pop. The biggest challenge was to find a vocalist we tried a lot of them and then a miracle happened. We found Elle. I totally believe in freedom of expression when it comes to collaborations so we never gave Elle any references or restrictions. I really don’t know how but she felt my mood at that moment, and wrote the lyrics of the girl who is a little lost, sometimes insecure and definitely looking for a lot of answers.” – says Teri Miko about “Feels Real”

The single is vibrant and soulful. This will gain a lot of positive attention I can tell already.

Throughout the last decade, Teri Miko has established herself as one of Indian dance music’s most prominent DJs and producers. This year alone, Teri has had several releases on Spinnin’ Records, such as “Kolavo” and “All I Want,” that showcase her signature high-energy bass sound; however, she proves she’s capable of switching gears on “Feels Real,” opening up a new realm of possibilities for her future sound.

Teri has accumulated an international audience through her high-energy live performances at India‘s largest dance events, such as Sunburn Festival and Supersonic, and regularly plays to packed venues at some of the largest parties at well-known universities around the country.

Her co-producer on “Feels Right,” DJ and producer Madoc, is an industry veteran known for his versatile style of music; Madoc‘s original productions range from driving house to rap and hip-hop influenced beats. Like Teri, Madoc has experimented with non-electronic tracks – his remix of Charlie Puth‘sAttention” received an overwhelmingly positive response, spurring further exploration into different genres. He knows how to keep a crowd on their toes and thus has become of one of the most popular and respected names in India‘s nightlife circuit over the last decade.

Indian producers are gaining international attention this year, so keep an eye on Teri and Madoc‘s evolution!

Whethan gives Phiilo two thumbs up

Phiilo took home that crown with their rendition of the viral hit. The remix also went to #1 on Hype Machine for a couple of days straight.

They spoke on the win saying:

“Just having some fun with this one. We think this track has a lot of our signature sounds: Nick’s electric guitar riffs, funky vibes, and even recordings of our friend playing the trombone. We hope you like it!”

I’m feeling this faster, funkier take! This would kill at a live show.

[BREAKING] Avicii’s Death Blamed on Ash Pournouri by Step-Father

When world-renowned DJ and producer Avicii died in April 2018, the entire world stopped in shock, and clamored for answers. Despite known health problems and mental illness captured in his chilling documentary True Storiesit was believed that Tim Bergling was overcoming his demons and working happily away at new music after quitting touring two years earlier. Recently in the Swedish podcast Värvet, Bergling’s step-father Tommy Körberg blames the touring lifestyle and particularly Avicii’s manager Ash Pournouri for his death.

On the podcast, Pournouri is directly shamed for the role Körberg believes he played in Avicii’s death.

“If he had a professional artist company, he would be alive today. When greed and stupidity go hand in hand, anything can happen, especially unfortunate things. There is no wicked damn man who records 900 gigs in eight years”

In the True Stories documentary, Pournouri actually says the words “he will drop dead” about the interviews, radio tours and touring Avicii was doing. Tommy Körberg believes it was this attitude that eventually led to Tim’s decline.

Defending himself upon hearing these remarks Pournouri had this to say

“Such a statement shows that it was based on the most limited impression of me and did not know the circumstances or him correctly…It’s a categorical statement from a person who has not participated in our work process or team, which draws a personal and wrong conclusion about my and Tim’s relationship, cooperation and his death.”

Indeed, immediately after Avicii died Ash posted the followiung statement on Instagram and Facebook before taking it down:

Since so few details have been truly released by the family about Avicii’s death, it is impossible to judge the situation fully. Pournouri does not want the weight of the death on his shoulders, but it is hard to escape when the family places it squarely there.

R.Frentz Releases "More Than Love" EP on Desert Hearts

Another smashing EP from a rising Desert Hearts Star!

The next EP on the California based record label Desert Hearts comes from a longtime friend of the crew, Zack Yakolev. Zach has a new alias R. Fentz. He really seems to really be hitting his stride as R. Fentz and we couldn’t be happier to debut his new sound on the label.

The is EP titled “More Than Love” and is the complete package, with five tracks in total, including three originals and two remixes from Burning Man celeb Atish and the Berlin-based legend Kevin Knapp. “More Than Love” is definitely one of the deepest EPs we’ve released on the label thus far. The three originals from R. Fentz, “More Than Love,” “Looking Up,” and “Flip O Coin” are gorgeous pieces of music, yet still perfect tracks to lay down on the dancefloor.

The Desert Hearts family has been eager for Resident artist Atish to do something with the label for ages, so it’s a very special occasion to be able to receive a remix of the title track. His remix adds a wonderfully mysterious and ethereal element to the package. Finally, Kevin Knapp rounds out the release with an amazing, housed-up remix of “Lookin Up”, making the track even more dance floor friendly.
